Welcome to DAMA Corner, a source of information for data management professionals here in TDAN.com, the industry leading publication for people interested in learning about data administration and data management disciplines and best practices.  Each column provides an update on the professional organization, DAMA International, and an opportunity to share your experience with other professionals that are passionate about data!

DAMA International is a not-for-profit, vendor independent association of technical and business professionals, dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices for data resource management and enterprise information. The primary purpose of DAMA International is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data and information to support business strategies.  DAMA International has chapters and members throughout the world.

DAMA Brazil

A message from a new chapter:  May 10, 2010:

Olá, tudo bem? (Hi, how are you?)

1. We are working to have the follow website address: www.dama.org.br (here in Brazil, to obtain a website .org address, it is necessary register the NGO first.  We are working on that) (Still under construction as of 5/24/2010)

DAMA South Florida

Anyone interested in joining can go to their web site www.damasouthflorida.org or write to them at DAMA South Florida, PO Box 170166, Miami, FL 33015.   Their inaugural meeting was in April and subsequent meetings are being planned.  Their President is  Eric S. Ackerman, Ph.D., Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Programs Nova Southeastern University - Graduate School of Computer and Information Sciences.
 
Presidents Council Meeting

DAMA Chapter Presidents convened on March 14th in San Francisco before the opening of the Enterprise Data World Conference.  Representatives from the Global, London, Chicago, Dallas, Minnesota, Philadelphia, San Francisco, South Africa, Rocky Mountain, and National Capital Regions were present.  The meeting included conversations regarding internal DAMA chapter communications as well as upcoming trends and topics.  The following list of topics was identified as continuing to be "hot" and worthy of additional local program attention by the chapters present:

• Agile Methodologies in IT/Business Analysis
• Cloud Computing
• Service Oriented architecture
• Web database design
• Document Management
• Unstructured data
• XML data sources
• Tags in enterprise data model
• Data Governance  and Compliance
• Incorporating data management concepts in data governance
• Data Quality
• Metadata Management

As a tactical response to the need for more intra-chapter communication, the VP of Communications proposed leveraging LinkedIn.  Chapter officers must request approval by providing their chapter name, their title, and their end of term in office date.

Enterprise Data World
 
Enterprise Data World was a great success!  More than 700 professionals in Data Management and associated disciplines attended this year.  The feeling of community at this event expanded beyond the boundaries of the meetings into the halls, spontaneous dinners, and on-going Linkedin  group interaction.   In addition to the educational value of the event, this was an opportunity for the community to celebrate the significant contributions of selected individuals through the 2010 DAMA Achievement Awards:
Academic Achievement Award – Elizabeth Pierce, University of Arkansas.

This award is given to a member from academia for outstanding research or theoretical contributions in the area of IRM/DRM, specifically, for the work that she has done in the formation of the Data Quality program at the University of Arkansas.

DAMA Community Award – Deborah Henderson
This award is given to a member of the DAMA community who has gone beyond the call of volunteer service to enhance the efforts of providing exceptional benefits to the DAMA Membership, for her more than twelve years of service to the data community on the DAMA International and DAMA Foundation boards, as well as for being the program manger for creation of the DAMA Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge.

Government Achievement Award – Kevin Kirby, EPA
This award is given to a member of the leadership populace for instituting the inclusion and adherence to DRM/IRM principles for championing the concepts of enterprise data management in his roles at the US federal government.

Professional Achievement Award – Alec Sharp
This award is given to a member from the ‘industry’ (business, discipline, specialist) who has made significant, demonstrable contributions to the IRM/DRM for his years of contribution to the field of data and process improvement and his writings on these topics.

DAMA DMBOK News

The DAMA-DMBOK is described through a free functional framework paper that can be downloaded in English, French, Spanish, or Chinese through the www.dama.org website.

In response to significant volumes of requests from both the professional and academic community, the DAMA-DMBOK print edition is now available through our publisher www.technicspub.com
 
Additionally, the DAMA-DMBOK is now available in Japanese, thanks to an amazing effort by Ichibori Seiji.

Standards News

2010 ISO Metadata Registries Standard Open Forum

Ben Hu of DAMA China and Bo Hu of Wohan University incorporated information about DAMA and the DAMA-DMBOK in their presentation at the 13th Open Forum for Metadata Registries, May 17-18, 2010 Kunming, China.
