Each column provides an update on the professional organization DAMA International, and an opportunity to share your experience with other professionals that are passionate about data!

About DAMA

DAMA International is a not-for-profit, vendor independent association of technical and business professionals dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices for data resource management and enterprise information. The primary purpose of DAMA International is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data and information to support business strategies. DAMA International has chapters and members throughout the world.

Chapter News

Ray McGlew, newly elected Chair of the Presidents’Council advised this was the best participation of chapter presidents  in attendance at  the recent joint Presidents’ Council and DAMA-I Board of Directors meeting. To keep communication channels open and enhance participation of chapter presidents there will be more Presidents’ Council teleconference meetings this year. There will also be regional teleconferences for the Europe/Africa and Asia/Pacific regions.

Enterprise Data World held in Chicago, Illinois, April 3-7, 2011, was a huge success. The business world’s most comprehensive vendor-neutral educational event about data and information management was up 20% in attendance. IT managers, data professionals and business stakeholders came together to discuss a variety of topics from Data Architecture to Master Data Management. Also at EDW this year, DAMA International released the 2nd edition of the Dictionary of Data Management and celebrated professional CDMP certifications of 15 colleagues.

Conference highlights included a keynote presentation from Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, Rob Karel, who presented “Avoid Process Data Headaches: Align Data Management and Business Process Initiatives. The second keynote, Executive Producer of the BBC Natural History Unit, Michael Gunton, shared his experience about making Life, the Emmy award-winning wildlife series made by the BBC with the Discovery Channel. The final keynote was “Long Fuse, BIG BANG: Achieving Long-Term Success Through Daily Victories,” by Eric Haseltine, President of Haseltine Partners LLC and formerly CTO of both Disney and the U.S. Directorate of National Intelligence.

DAMA International announced DAMA Individual Achievement Awards at the 2011 Enterprise Data World conference. Each of these awards recognizes a data management professional who has made significant and demonstrable contributions to the information resource management field consistent with DAMA International’s vision. This program is designed to promote awareness of the contribution individuals have made to the four specific areas of data management:

  • Academic Achievement Award – Dr. Gordon Everest
  • DAMA Community Award – Cathy Nolan
  • Professional Achievement Award – Malcolm Chisholm
  • Government Achievement Award – not awarded

Each DAMA Chapter has the opportunity to nominate one or more candidates. Begin considering your nominations for the 2012 time period. Members who want to nominate an individual can download a nomination form from  the DAMA International website. Or, they can call or write the DAMA Awards Committee, 19239 N. The awards are international, given the worldwide reach of data and information management, and the international focus of DAMA and its chapters.

DAMA Foundation

DAMA Foundation is 501c3 Research and Education Affiliate of DAMA International with a mission to promote professional data management through fund raising and strategic funds placement. The foundation’s strategic direction is to “Lead The Data Management Profession Toward Maturity” by: 1.) Providing financial assistance for education and research in the data management profession, including graduate and post-graduate academic activities and 2.) Funding efforts for the establishment of data management curricula within educational facilities at all levels. DAMA Foundation is in the process of developing a new website. The foundation is the owner of the newly released 2nd edition of the Dictionary of Data Management. The foundation is also building new connections in social media areas.
